Victoria River Downs Station (VRD)
Time flies when you’re having fun! The team at Victoria River Downs (VRD) and Humbert River Station (HBR) have had a massive few months with so many exciting opportunities!
The team completed first round mustering at the end of May, with the crew enjoying the experience of camping out at #36 Yards and Larry’s Lake. All breeders have been processed and their weaners branded, educated and walked away. In between a busy mustering program, 6450 baits were cut, injected and put out by the team for the wild dog baiting program at VRD and HBR.
A well-deserved few days was had at the annual Bull's Head Muster in June. The VRD and HBR crew showcased their team work in the station challenge, placing second, just one point behind Mt Sanford. A great few days was had by all and a massive thank you to our team here at VRD for all their efforts in hosting the event.
Back to work after Bull's Head Muster, joiner heifers were mustered and preg-tested before being walked out to a fresh paddock. The team worked hard to process, paddock and turn off sale and agistment cattle.
So far this year, 3400 head of sale cattle have been processed as well as transferring 561 head to the agistment property and a further 480 to Birrindudu. The #1 heifers were recently mustered and drafted through the yards for our keeper heifers to be selected. The culls are to be transferred to Flora Valley later this month.
It’s not all work though! We were very lucky to have Bill and Jody Harding visit VRD for a weekend in July to hold a private horsemanship and working dog school. Moolooloo and Pigeon Hole made the trip to attend also, this was a great weekend enjoyed by all.
We had Jim Leonhardt from Impact Mechanical Maintenance hold a heavy vehicle training at VRD for selected people from each Heytesbury Station to attended. Later in the month he also conducted our light vehicle training, specifically for the VRD and HBR team. A massive thank you to Jim, a wealth of knowledge and experience was gained by all who attended.
The staff have had the opportunity to attend local campdrafts and rodeo’s recently, with some great results from the team! We are looking forward to making it to a few more in the coming months.
The weather hasn’t been kind to us this year, delivering a below average wet season followed by out of season, cold wet weather at the end of June. Despite the few millimeters of rain we received, the Victoria River had stopped flowing and the crossing at Dashwood was a dry and dusty location. Last week we experienced an earth tremor during the night, the following morning the Dashwood crossing was flowing over the causeway!
